Case Introduction

IMU (Inertial Measurement Unit) is the core component for unmanned aerial vehicles to achieve attitude and motion perception. If IMU is missing, the vehicle will lose its attitude perception ability, leading to fundamental problems such as motion control failure and serious decrease in operational accuracy, ultimately unable to achieve stable autonomous operation - after all, IMU is the core sensor for robots to obtain their own attitude and motion state information.

When the robot undergoes posture changes such as tilting, turning, bouncing, accelerating or decelerating, the IMU can provide the following key data in real time:
1.Real time measurement of attitude parameters
IMU outputs real-time through built-in gyroscope and accelerometer:
  • Attitude angle (roll angle, pitch angle, yaw angle);
  • Angular velocity (reflecting the rate of attitude change);
  • Linear acceleration (used to identify motion states such as acceleration, deceleration, and bumps).
With the help of this information, robots can accurately determine whether their posture is stable, how much steering angle they have, and whether they have encountered collisions or potholes.

2.Motion Control and Driving Stability
The autonomous navigation, path tracking, and smooth driving of unmanned aerial vehicles all rely on IMU data to achieve closed-loop control:
  • Logistics delivery robots adjust their steering in real-time based on IMU angular velocity data during turning to prevent overshoot or yaw;
  • Industrial AGV/AMR uses IMU pitch angle information to adjust motor output during hill driving, avoiding skidding or stalling;
  • The urban cleaning robot compensates for road bumps through IMU acceleration data to ensure operational stability.

If there is no IMU, the control algorithm will lose real-time data support, leading to problems such as turning drift, slope slip, inaccurate posture after bumps, deviation from straight driving, and even causing out of control collisions.
